Among the tests applicable to traction batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles are the Regulation 100 tests. These tests are essential for the type-approval of an electric or hybrid vehicle, since, without the type-approval of the traction battery with this regulation (Part II of R-100), it is not possible to type-approve an electric or hybrid vehicle.
The most significant tests of this regulation are vibrations, mechanical shock, mechanical integrity, thermal shock and cycling, short circuit, overcharge, over-discharge and overheating protection, fire resistance, etc. LCOE is the only technical service that performs all the tests of this regulation in Spain.
Traction batteries incorporate electronic controls (BMS) in each module or cell of the battery assembly, for the functional control (thermal, electrical, etc.) of each of them. This issue is particularly critical, since it is where the intrinsic safety of the batteries is based, with the thermal control of the chemistry of the cells being of special importance due to the risk of spontaneous fire.
LCOE performs both EMC (R10) and electrical safety tests according to R-100, applicable to traction batteries as a component.
